Hush Harbor Rootworks was specifically named such for the ritual spaces our ancestors carved out in secluded woodland forests in order to maintain their connection to Creator through rituals of worship, music & storytelling. Hush harbors were their church, hospital, library and school located outside the harsh reality of their New World environs. It was their sacred space amongst the oldest of ancestors, the trees. These were places of communion where preservation of language, spirituality, culture and stories took place. Starting out as herb shop and medicine space in Berkeley,California, Hush Harbor Rootworks used that arena to gather community and make/sell fresh time-honored ancestral medicines to folks in need. The use & knowledge of family recipes as well as culturally significant plants and herbs is what set us apart, as well as sourcing from local home gardens. You could say, we were already doing preservation work. The purpose of Hush Harbor Rootworks is to educate the public in ancestral folkways, foodways, of the Southeast, including herbal knowledge, medicine arts, landwork, culture and sustainable living practices. We intend to be a bridge between the West Coast and the Southeast forging alliances between generations, classes and races of people that are on various pathways towards recalling the memories and the know-how of our ancestors.
