Eastern Red Cedars trees found along the Eastern Seaboard are not real cedars, but in fact Juniper trees. These are sacred trees for many Native people throughout the region both above and below the Mason-Dixon line. Both my Geechee ancestors and my Seminole/Miccosukee ancestors use the leaves to smoke a person or place. It's for protection and cleansing.
